George Mason Ä¢¹½AV’s competitive cyber club is headed to the National Collegiate Cyber Defense CompetitionĀ (NCCDC)Ā after beatingĀ outĀ intenseĀ competition in a nationwide wildcard round.Ā Ā

Mason Competitive Cyber is a team of undergraduate studentsĀ from differentĀ majors who spend their free time competing inĀ various cyber competitions. Last year, the team won theĀ CyberFusionĀ State Cup, where they competed againstĀ allĀ the universities in Virginia.Ā Ā

This year is the first time the team hasĀ advanced toĀ the NCCDCĀ since their firstĀ appearanceĀ in 2019. ā€œThereĀ are two general kinds of competitions:Ā jeopardy andĀ attack-defense. MCCĀ has traditionally excelled in the Jeopardy competitions.  CCDC is an Attack-Defense competition.  In 2019,Ā MasonCCĀ competed in the Mid-Atlantic CCDC for the very first time.  That year we did not make it out of the qualifier round,ā€ says Caleb Yu, vice presidentĀ for the club.Ā Ā

After their initial loss,Ā some team members weren’t sure if this was the competition for them. But they came back in 2020 and placedĀ higherĀ in their region. The nine regions of the country take the first-place winner from the regional competitions, and this year the team won second place for their region.Ā

ā€œSince we won second, weĀ qualified for aĀ wildcard round.  We competed against the eight otherĀ second-place teams from the other regions.  Once again, only theĀ first-placeĀ team advancesĀ to the national finals,ā€ says Yu.Ā Ā

TheĀ MCCĀ team pulled out the win, coming in first,Ā withĀ Stanford Ä¢¹½AV’sĀ teamĀ taking second. ā€œStanfordĀ gotĀ thirdĀ place in the national competition last year.  When we noticed that they were also in the wildcard round, we knew that we'd have some fierce competition.Ā It feels awesome to have advanced in place of a team that could have been seen as a heavy favorite,ā€ he says.Ā Ā

The team willĀ compete on April 23 through 25 against the top teams from across the country. ā€œWe are expecting someĀ fierceĀ competition from the other schools, but our confidence has never been higher,ā€ says Yu.Ā Ā
